About Us
The RainLine Story
Over 30 years of research and development has gone into The RainLine
System. The RainLine Corporation decided that a profiled line was
the only way to provide vision to the driver in wet conditions.
After this, the next step was the development of a material that would
retain the profiles. A thermoplastic material must be thixotrophic
to be suitable for use with The RainLine System. This means that
when under pressure the thermoplastic moves easily, but when the pressure
is removed the material freezes in place.
How Do You Do That?
The
RainLine System is comprised of a hot applied thermoplastic stripe that
receives a double coating of glass beads. The glass beads are
imprinted or embossed by a specially designed embossing wheel that is
rolled over the thermoplastic and beads while they are still hot.
This entire application process takes place within 1 second as the
inverted profiles are hot formed and the glass beads are pressed to their
ideal embedment.
Who Can Participate?
RainLine can be installed by any private contractor or government agency
by simply adding a kit to their existing self-propelled thermoplastic
striping machine. The RainLine Corporation provides technical
support to help install the kit and to conduct crew training.

Thermoplastic material may be manufactured by an manufacturer meeting
state specifications. A RainLine licensed contractor is free to
choose his own material manufacturer. Comprehensive recommended
material and construction specifications
are available from The RainLine Corporation. What's
That Noise?
Standard RainLine emits a low humming sound when wheels pass over it,
but somtimes a more aggressive sound is desirable. For those
occasions we offer Audible RainLine.
Rumble strips are another area the Federal Highway Administration is
emphasizing. Audible
RainLine will provide many of the same effects as rumble strips and
provide delineation for the motorist at the same time.
Audible RainLine utilizes the same principles as Standard RainLine, with
the addition of a regulated bump applied at specific intervals.
After the bump is placed, the RainLine wheel jumps over it. The
remainder of the time the wheel rolls along as in standard RainLine. Covered
by U.S. Patent Nos. 5,439,312, 5,511,896, and 5,642,962
